HPP, Yeah, You Know Me! Who Is Humble Pie?

February 8, 2019

What do you get when a farm girl marries a 4th generation cabinet maker? The top husband and wife wedding videography team in central Alberta.

I’m Natalie Winters. I’m the owner and producer of Humble Pie Productions.

I grew up on a farm in the “area formerly known as Balzac”. I graduated from SAIT in 2005 with a diploma in Broadcast Journalism. After marrying Dean I moved to Canmore and worked for their small town radio station writing/reading news, giving all kinds of reports from traffic, trails and weather, to the best granola in town.

Dean and I moved to Sundre in 2007 with child number one, and child number two on the way. While raising our now 3 children (all July babies), I started to create video productions for our little church. In 2013 I was asked to film my first wedding by a fellow at our church. I declined the offer three times as I didn’t feel it was my destiny! Well, he wouldn’t take no for an answer.

So with a Canon Rebel and a Kodak zi8 we broke into the wedding industry! And so Humble Pie Productions was born.

As a little girl I loved to sit and listen to the tales regaled around our farmhouse table. Telling stories was just a natural path for me. I lived for public speaking during my 4-H years and in 2002 I honed my elocution skills as a Calgary Stampede Princess. When I applied for the Broadcast course at SAIT, I fully intended to be on the “talent” side of the camera. Yet another aspect of the humble theme in our lives.

There is a lid for every pot, a good friend likes to say. Well I’m not sure who’s the pot and who’s the lid, but Dean and I go like pickles on a pepperoni pizza (a family fave). Dean is one of the nicest guys you’ll ever meet. But that really doesn’t do justice to this partner of 14 years. Dean has never had an enemy in his life! He’s a farm kid also and he attended Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary because of his love of western art.

Dean is the art beat and quality control for Humble Pie Productions.

In 2000 Dean went to work with his dad in the family business (you have to check out https://www.winterswoodworks.com ). In 2002 he moved to Canmore to work for TriStar Woodowrks. We moved to Sundre in 2007 so Dean could work with his dad.

With his art background and his “quick on the feet” farm kid skills, when I asked him to be my second shooter he stepped up like a pro. Together we took a crash course in EVERYTHING to do with filming and editing a wedding, and building a business.

So now we’re into our sixth year filming weddings and producing promotional films. Our greatest strength is each other.

“Two are better than one… A chord of three strands is not easily broken”.

We have over 70 weddings to our HPP name and we’re training up the next crop of wedding shooters.

Every year we’re honing our craft and mastering this art. Every wedding we film, we learn something new. Staying humble so we’re moldable, usable, relatable, is the foundation we build on every day. When you have nothing to learn you might as well quit.

We love what we do! Every wedding we film is an honour to capture. We believe in marriage. Sarcasm (the nice kind) is our second language. Laughing is our first.

We hope you’ll join us on the adventure and you’ll watch us grow. We can never have enough friends or support.
